The Leopard Gecko Feeder Size Rule Explained
The rule itself
Measuring roughly the width between a gecko's eyes gives a practical, always-available size guide for any feeder insect offered, scaling naturally as the gecko itself grows.
Why it's not just a guideline
An insect too wide relative to the gecko's head and throat can genuinely cause choking, regurgitation after swallowing, or contribute to impaction — this isn't just about feeding efficiency, it's a real safety consideration.
Adjusting as a gecko grows
Because the rule is proportional rather than a fixed measurement, feeder size should scale up gradually as a juvenile grows into an adult, rather than jumping straight to adult-sized prey once a certain age is reached.
When in doubt, size down
If unsure whether a given feeder is appropriately sized, choosing the smaller option is the safer default — a slightly small feeder just means offering one or two more, while an oversized one carries real risk.
