Things every leopard gecko keeper should understand — biology, behaviour, husbandry, and the welfare issues that matter when choosing a morph.
Facts & husbandry
Most active at dawn and dusk when temperatures in their native Pakistan and Afghanistan are ideal. During the day they shelter in rock crevices. In captivity, a gecko appearing inactive during daylight hours is completely normal — not a sign of illness.
A widespread misconception is that the tail acts like a camel's hump storing water. It stores fat used during food scarcity. A plump, rounded tail indicates good body condition. A severely thinned tail base warrants a vet visit.
Autotomy — voluntary tail shedding — is a defence mechanism. The regenerated tail is rounded, fatty, and made of cartilage rather than bone. It will differ in texture and colour from the original. The gecko survives and feeds normally throughout regrowth.
Unlike most gecko species which use van der Waals forces to climb smooth surfaces, leopard geckos have conventional claws. They cannot escape smooth-walled enclosures. This means front-opening vivariums work perfectly and no screen top is required for containment.
The moveable eyelid is unusual among geckos. Most species have a fixed transparent brille fused over the eye. Leopard geckos have true eyelids, making eye infections and retained shed around the eyes easier to spot and treat.
Hold your gecko up to a light source and look through one ear opening — you can see light through the other side. The ear canals run straight through the skull. This is entirely normal anatomy that alarms many first-time keepers unnecessarily.
Leopard geckos exhibit Temperature-dependent Sex Determination. Eggs at 79–81°F produce predominantly females. Eggs at 88–90°F produce predominantly males. The 82–85°F range produces a mixed clutch with a female bias. There are no sex chromosomes — genetics play no role.
Geckos consume their shed skin immediately after completing a shed. This reclaims nutrients and removes evidence of their presence from predators — a survival behaviour from the wild. If your gecko misses some shed, simply remove it.
MBD results from calcium deficiency, D3 deficiency, or an imbalanced Ca:P ratio. Symptoms include rubbery limbs, tremors, inability to walk, and jaw deformity. It is caused by skipping calcium dusting on feeders. Dust every feeding for juveniles, every other feeding for adults.
They are among the longest-lived lizards kept as pets. Females have shorter average lifespans because egg production, which occurs even without a male present, is metabolically costly. A gecko bought as a juvenile is a 15–20 year commitment.
Crypto is caused by Cryptosporidium varanii. It causes progressive wasting and death with no cure. It is highly contagious between reptiles via faecal-oral transmission. All new geckos must be strictly quarantined with completely separate equipment — never share hides, water dishes, or tools without sterilisation.
When hunting, leopard geckos ingest substrate along with prey. Sand, gravel, walnut shell, and calcium sand all pose impaction risks. Calcium sand is particularly problematic despite marketing — it clumps in the digestive tract. Safe substrates include ceramic tiles, vinyl, paper towel, and bioactive mixes.
Leopard geckos are ectotherms that regulate body temperature by moving between zones. Warm end: 88–92°F surface. Cool end: 73–76°F. Belly heat from under-tank heaters or heat cable on a thermostat is more important than overhead heat alone, as digestion depends on warmth from below.
Leopard geckos were historically kept without UVB by supplementing D3 in calcium powder. Research since 2018 shows crepuscular geckos do encounter UV naturally and benefit from low-level exposure. UVB allows natural D3 synthesis and may improve immune function. Not strictly required but increasingly recommended.
The slow deliberate side-to-side wave is a pre-strike behaviour seen when stalking prey. The rapid rattle — similar to a rattlesnake's — signals agitation or a threat display. Learning to read these behaviours helps you understand your gecko's state before handling.
Repeatedly scratching the enclosure walls indicates a problem — most commonly incorrect temperatures, a reflection perceived as a rival, an enclosure that is too small, or a gravid female seeking to lay eggs. Check temperatures first, then cover reflective surfaces.
Leopard geckos may eat less and become less active between October and February even in captivity. This is a response to seasonal light changes. As long as temperatures remain correct, water is available, and the gecko maintains weight, this is normal. Do not force-feed.
Their natural range spans dry, rocky foothill terrain rather than sandy desert. This is why loose sand is a poor substrate choice — wild leos live on hardpan soil, gravel, and rock, not shifting dune sand.
A newly hatched leopard gecko looks dramatically different from an adult, with high-contrast juvenile banding across the body and tail. This pattern fades and fragments into the familiar spotted adult look over the first year, independent of morph.
Breeding season typically runs spring through summer. Because egg-laying is metabolically demanding regardless of fertilisation, females need extra calcium and food during this period even if no male is present.
Unfertilised eggs still need to be laid. Poor calcium levels, an unsuitable lay box, or obesity can prevent normal egg-laying. Swelling, straining, or lethargy in a gravid-looking female is an emergency requiring a reptile vet.
These are the endolymphatic sacs, used to bank extra calcium reserves. They're most visible in well-supplemented adults and are a normal anatomical feature, not a symptom of disease.
This row of pores sits just above the vent and is used, along with hemipenal bulges at the tail base, to visually sex adult leopard geckos from roughly six months of age onward.
Water dishes should be shallow enough for a gecko to stand in without submerging. Unlike some reptiles, leos have no natural swimming adaptation, so deep bowls or flooded enclosures are a genuine drowning hazard.
Autotomy is a stress response, not just a defence against predators. Always support a gecko's body when picking it up and let it walk onto your hand rather than pulling it by the tail.
Colour darkening helps with thermoregulation and camouflage and is a normal, reversible response. A gecko that's consistently dark alongside other symptoms like lethargy or poor appetite should still be checked over, but darkening alone isn't diagnostic of illness.
They are polyphyodont, meaning old teeth are shed and replaced on a rolling basis rather than growing in once like mammal teeth. This is one reason minor tooth loss from feeder bites is rarely a long-term problem.
They have small, blunt teeth suited to gripping insects, not defence against large animals. Bites usually happen when a gecko mistakes a finger for food and let go almost immediately once it realises.
They have no venom glands or delivery mechanism of any kind. Any swelling after a bite is a minor mechanical reaction, not a venom response.
The regenerated tail grows back faster than the original developed but never matches its bone structure, texture, or colour exactly. Feeding should continue normally during regrowth to support the process.
Each subsequent regrowth tends to look more irregular than the last, often shorter, stubbier, or asymmetrical, but the gecko's health and mobility are unaffected as long as the wound heals cleanly.
Without extra humidity at shed time, skin can stick and fail to come away, especially on the toes, where retained shed can cut off circulation. A moist hide with damp sphagnum moss or paper towel should be available at all times, not just during a visible shed.
This is one of the most common preventable injuries in captive leopard geckos. Checking toes and the tail tip after every shed, and soaking or gently assisting stuck shed with a damp cotton swab, prevents most cases.
This rostral abrasion is a direct physical consequence of a behavioural stress sign. Addressing the underlying cause of glass surfing — usually temperature or a visible reflection — prevents the injury from developing further.
Firm, chalky white urates alongside a well-formed dark stool generally indicate good hydration. Runny, discoloured, or absent urates over several droppings can flag a hydration or health issue worth monitoring.
Gut-loading — feeding the insects a nutritious diet before feeding them out — significantly boosts the calcium and vitamin content actually passed on to the gecko. Crickets fed to a gecko straight from a bare cup pass on very little nutritional value.
Because of this, mealworms are usually treated as an occasional feeder for adults rather than a staple, and are generally avoided for young, growing geckos in favour of softer-bodied prey.
Uneaten superworms should be removed rather than left in with the gecko. This risk is highest with weak, sick, or very young geckos that may not eat the worm promptly.
Geckos tend to find waxworms highly palatable, which can lead to selective feeding and obesity if offered too often. Most keepers limit them to once every week or two at most.
They have a favourable protein-to-fat ratio, softer exoskeletons than many beetles, and are easy to gut-load, which is why many keepers use them as a primary staple alongside crickets.
This doesn't replace the need for fresh drinking water, but it explains why well-hydrated, properly gut-loaded feeders contribute to overall gecko health beyond just calories.
Males are territorial toward other males and fights can cause serious injuries including tail loss, bite wounds, and lasting stress. Females can sometimes cohabit peacefully but should still be watched closely and separated at feeding time or any sign of aggression.
Preanal pores and hemipenal bulges are underdeveloped in younger geckos, so sex determination attempted before this age is often unreliable, even for experienced keepers.
Warmer incubation temperatures generally shorten development time while cooler ones extend it, alongside their well-known role in determining hatchling sex.
Despite their tiny size, hatchlings are fully independent from the moment they emerge and typically take their first shed and first meal within about a week.
