Recognizing gravid status
Two pale, oval shapes are often visible through the belly skin, along with a rounder overall body shape and sometimes reduced appetite in the final days before laying.
Increased needs
A gravid female needs more frequent feeding and increased calcium dusting to support egg development without depleting her own bone calcium reserves — insufficient calcium during this period is a leading cause of egg-binding.
Lay box setup
Provide a covered, moist lay box filled with a diggable substrate like moist coco coir or vermiculite, kept around 86–90°F, so she has somewhere secure to dig and lay rather than depositing eggs on bare substrate.
Egg-binding — a real emergency
A female straining without producing eggs, lethargic, or visibly distressed with retained eggs needs an emergency vet visit — egg-binding (dystocia) can be fatal if untreated and isn't something to wait out at home.
Handling during this period
Keep handling minimal and gentle, avoiding pressure on the abdomen, and prioritize a calm, low-stress environment through to laying.

A single adult leopard gecko needs a 20-gallon long tank as an absolute minimum, with a 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) footprint now considered the recommended standard — plus a secure lid, an under-tank heater on a thermostat, a thermal gradient, at least three hides, and a shallow water dish.
Set up in this order: substrate, then heat source wired through a thermostat, then hides and water dish, then decor — and run the whole enclosure for at least 24–48 hours to confirm stable temperatures before your gecko moves in.
Hatchlings can start in a 10-gallon tank or tub, juveniles do well in 20 gallons, and adults need a 20-gallon long as an absolute minimum — with 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) now the widely recommended standard, not just an upgrade.
