The core requirement, regardless of method
Whatever incubator style is used, the two non-negotiables are temperature stability (via a reliable thermostat, not a bare heat source) and a moist — not wet — incubation medium like vermiculite or perlite mixed to the correct ratio, since both temperature and humidity swings are common causes of failed clutches.
DIY setups
A common DIY approach uses an insulated container or small heated cabinet with a thermostat-controlled heat source and a deli cup or tub of moist substrate holding the eggs — this can work reliably but depends heavily on the quality of the thermostat and probe placement.
Commercial incubators
Purpose-built reptile egg incubators offer more consistent, pre-calibrated temperature control and are generally easier for less experienced breeders to manage reliably, at a higher upfront cost than a DIY build.
Monitoring either way
Regardless of setup type, a separate digital thermometer probe (not just relying on a built-in display) placed at egg level is standard practice, since incubator readouts can drift from actual conditions at the eggs.

A single adult leopard gecko needs a 20-gallon long tank as an absolute minimum, with a 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) footprint now considered the recommended standard — plus a secure lid, an under-tank heater on a thermostat, a thermal gradient, at least three hides, and a shallow water dish.
Set up in this order: substrate, then heat source wired through a thermostat, then hides and water dish, then decor — and run the whole enclosure for at least 24–48 hours to confirm stable temperatures before your gecko moves in.
