What each does
Springtails primarily target mold and fungal growth along with fine organic debris, while isopods handle larger waste items like feces and leftover feeder insects — together they form a functional decomposition team that reduces how often substrate needs full replacement.
Choosing arid-tolerant species
Many popular bioactive isopod and springtail species are chosen for humid tropical setups and won't thrive in a leopard gecko's drier arid substrate — dwarf white isopods (Dalmatian or similar hardy strains) and drought-tolerant springtail strains are better suited to an arid bioactive build.
Establishing the colony before adding a gecko
The clean-up crew needs time — often several weeks — to establish a self-sustaining population before a gecko is introduced, since an underdeveloped colony can't keep pace with a gecko's waste output from day one.
Won't a gecko just eat them all?
A large enough starter colony with adequate hiding spots (leaf litter, bark, substrate depth) generally sustains predation from an occasional isopod snack, though very small starter populations can be wiped out before establishing if a gecko is added too soon.

A single adult leopard gecko needs a 20-gallon long tank as an absolute minimum, with a 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) footprint now considered the recommended standard — plus a secure lid, an under-tank heater on a thermostat, a thermal gradient, at least three hides, and a shallow water dish.
Set up in this order: substrate, then heat source wired through a thermostat, then hides and water dish, then decor — and run the whole enclosure for at least 24–48 hours to confirm stable temperatures before your gecko moves in.
Hatchlings can start in a 10-gallon tank or tub, juveniles do well in 20 gallons, and adults need a 20-gallon long as an absolute minimum — with 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) now the widely recommended standard, not just an upgrade.
