Why a consistent cycle matters
A regular photoperiod helps regulate a gecko's activity patterns, appetite, and general rhythm, similar to how consistent light cycles matter for many animals. Random or inconsistent lighting can add low-grade stress even if temperatures are otherwise correct.
Setting it up
A simple outlet timer on any UVB lighting removes the guesswork and ensures the cycle stays consistent even if you forget to turn lights on or off manually. Most keepers run roughly 10–12 hours of light and 12–14 hours of darkness.
Nighttime viewing
Standard white light disrupts a nocturnal/crepuscular species' natural rhythm if used after dark. If you want to observe nighttime activity, use a dim red, black (infrared), or moonlight-style bulb, which lets you see without disturbing normal behavior.
Seasonal adjustment
Some keepers slightly shorten the light cycle in winter to roughly mirror natural seasonal changes, which can support a gecko's normal seasonal slowdown — though holding a consistent year-round cycle is also perfectly fine for a captive setup.

A single adult leopard gecko needs a 20-gallon long tank as an absolute minimum, with a 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) footprint now considered the recommended standard — plus a secure lid, an under-tank heater on a thermostat, a thermal gradient, at least three hides, and a shallow water dish.
Set up in this order: substrate, then heat source wired through a thermostat, then hides and water dish, then decor — and run the whole enclosure for at least 24–48 hours to confirm stable temperatures before your gecko moves in.
