Why these spots specifically
Toes and the narrow tail tip are the hardest areas for a gecko to shed from unassisted, and low humidity around the shedding period makes it more likely for a ring of old skin to stay stuck rather than come free with the rest of the shed.
The real risk
A retained shed ring around a toe or the tail tip can tighten over days and act like a tourniquet, restricting blood flow. Left untreated, this can lead to the loss of the toe tip or tail tip.
Safe removal
Soak the affected area in shallow, shoulder-depth, lukewarm water for 15–20 minutes to soften the retained skin, then very gently roll or peel it away — it should come off with minimal resistance. Never pull or force it while dry.
Prevention
Providing a properly humid hide during shedding periods and checking toes and the tail tip after every shed are the two most effective habits for catching this before it becomes a circulation problem.
