Flat, simple setups
Tile, vinyl flooring, and paper towel don't have a meaningful 'depth' consideration — they sit as a thin surface layer and don't support digging behavior, which is fine for a straightforward, easy-to-maintain setup.
Digging-friendly and bioactive setups
If the goal is a naturalistic substrate a gecko can dig and burrow in, aim for at least 3–4 inches, firmly packed rather than loose and fluffy, so tunnels hold their shape instead of collapsing on the gecko.
Why packing matters as much as depth
A loosely piled substrate of the right depth can still collapse and fail to support burrows, while a well-packed, slightly moistened mix holds structure even at a moderate depth — technique matters alongside the raw inches.
Depth and drainage in bioactive builds
Bioactive setups typically add a drainage layer beneath the substrate itself, meaning the visible substrate depth doesn't need to be excessive on top of that base layer to still support planting and digging.

A single adult leopard gecko needs a 20-gallon long tank as an absolute minimum, with a 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) footprint now considered the recommended standard — plus a secure lid, an under-tank heater on a thermostat, a thermal gradient, at least three hides, and a shallow water dish.
Set up in this order: substrate, then heat source wired through a thermostat, then hides and water dish, then decor — and run the whole enclosure for at least 24–48 hours to confirm stable temperatures before your gecko moves in.
Hatchlings can start in a 10-gallon tank or tub, juveniles do well in 20 gallons, and adults need a 20-gallon long as an absolute minimum — with 36x18 in (40-gallon breeder) now the widely recommended standard, not just an upgrade.
