The crested gecko's genus was split from Rhacodactylus in 2012

A 2012 taxonomic revision moved the crested gecko into its own genus, Correlophus, while the gargoyle gecko, New Caledonian giant gecko, and chahoua remained in Rhacodactylus. The two genera are still treated as close relatives in the pet trade, which is part of why gargoyle and crested gecko husbandry advice overlaps so heavily.
