The entire wild population lives in a small area of one island

Rhacodactylus auriculatus is only known from the southern province of Grande Terre, New Caledonia's main island, and does not occur naturally anywhere else on Earth. This narrow endemic range is why habitat protection on that one island matters so much for the species' long-term wild survival, independent of how common it is in captivity.
